Burial of the polar magnetic field of an accreting neutron star. I. Self-consistent analytic and numerical equilibria

چکیده
The hydromagnetic structure of a neutron star accreting symmetrically at both magnetic poles is calculated as a function of accreted mass, Ma, and polar cap radius, starting from a centered magnetic dipole and evolving through a quasistatic sequence of two-dimensional, Grad-Shafranov equilibria. The calculation is the first to track fully the growth of high-order magnetic multipoles, due to equatorward hydromagnetic spreading, while simultaneously preserving flux freezing and a self-consistent mass-flux distribution. Equilibria are constructed numerically by an iterative scheme and analytically by Green functions. Two key results are obtained, with implications for recycled pulsars. (i) The mass required to significantly reduce the magnetic dipole moment, 10M⊙, greatly exceeds previous estimates (∼ 10 −10 M⊙), which ignored the confining stress exerted by the compressed equatorial magnetic field. (ii) Magnetic bubbles, disconnected from the stellar surface, form in the later stages of accretion (Ma & 10 −4 M⊙).

Burial of the polar magnetic field of an accreting neutron star – II. Hydromagnetic stability of axisymmetric equilibria
The theory of polar magnetic burial in accreting neutron stars predicts that a mountain of accreted material accumulates at the magnetic poles of the star, and that, as the mountain spreads equatorward, it is confined by, and compresses, the equatorial magnetic field. Here, we extend previous, axisymmetric, Grad–Shafranov calculations of the hydromagnetic structure of a magnetic mountain up to ...
متن کاملContinuous frequency spectrum of the global hydromagnetic oscillations of a magnetically confined mountain on an accreting neutron star
We compute the continuous part of the ideal-magnetohydrodynamic (ideal-MHD) frequency spectrum of a polar mountain produced by magnetic burial on an accreting neutron star. Applying the formalism developed by Hellsten & Spies (1979), extended to include gravity, we solve the singular eigenvalue problem subject to line-tying boundary conditions. This spectrum divides into an Alfvén part and a cu...
متن کاملGravitational Radiation from an Accreting Millisecond Pulsar with a Magnetically Confined Mountain
The amplitude of the gravitational radiation from an accreting neutron star undergoing polar magnetic burial is calculated. During accretion, the magnetic field of a neutron star is compressed into a narrow belt at the magnetic equator by material spreading equatorward from the polar cap. In turn, the compressed field confines the accreted material in a polar mountain which is misaligned with t...
متن کاملMagnetic Burial and the Harmonic Content of Millisecond Oscillations in Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts
Matter accreting onto the magnetic poles of a neutron star spreads under gravity towards the magnetic equator, burying the polar magnetic field and compressing it into a narrow equatorial belt. Steady-state, Grad-Shafranov calculations with a self-consistent mass-flux distribution (and a semiquantitative treatment of Ohmic diffusion) show that, forMa & 10 M⊙, the maximum field strength and lati...
متن کاملThe bottom magnetic field and magnetosphere evolution of neutron star in low mass X - ray binary
The accretion induced neutron star magnetic field evolution is studied through considering the accretion flow to drag the field lines aside and dilute the polar field strength, and as a result the equatorial field strength increases, which is buried inside the crust on account of the accretion induced global compression of star crust. The main conclusions of model are as follows: (i) the polar ...
